PROJECT: Geneva Steel Mill – Vineyard, Utah

Environmental Remediation and Total Demolition Overview
The Geneva Steel Mill project involved the demolition, asbestos abatement, and hazardous materials remediation of an idle steel mill. The work included:
- Removal of approximately 500,000 linear feet of TSI piping
- Removal of approximately 1,000,000 square feet of transite siding
- Demolition of 2,700 acre plant in 12 zones, including: coke ovens, by-products, blast furnace, maintenance repair, pipe mill, open hearth, administrative building, sewage treatment center, powerhouse and main switch buildings, and landfill (totaling approximately 4.5 million square feet)
CST Environmental was able to recycle 80 miles of railroad ties and track, 400 rail carts, and 13 locomotives. Several large machines and equipment were salvaged, and CST Environmental cleaned and removed more than 400 tanks. Over 300,000 tons of material was recycled.
CST Environmental overcame the challenge of the project size by using large Hitachi 1200 and 1100 excavators, in-place shears, and 80-ton hall pack trucks. Work was completed in 30 months utilizing 40 to 50 laborers and operators. CST Environmental is the only contractor that was able to perform all facets of demolition and environmental abatement of an integrated steel plant.
